Tuesday. Day after Valentine’s. Found a rose in plot two. Found a ring box in plot one, empty, which I am choosing to see as good news.
Every pair last night was a couple. You can tell from the shed. Couples argue differently. Friends shout. Couples go quiet, then one of them says “I KNOW” in a certain way, and you know it has been building since about 2014.
What I notice is it starts with them apart. One in each box, can’t see each other, can only hear. Some of them don’t like that one bit. Then they start talking properly, and you can hear the moment it turns, and after that they’re out of the ground before you’ve finished your tea.
One pair came out holding hands and walked straight past me without a word. Another pair came out in silence and walked out at different speeds. I raked both plots the same. Not my place to judge. Only my place to rake.
Tally: plots disturbed, two. Roses, one. Tuppence sat in the ring box. It fitted her better than it would have fitted anyone.
